Home Maintenance Tips for Spring

spring

Spring weather is just around the corner.

Take advantage of the moderate temperatures to start your annual spring home maintenance.

Exterior:

Walk around your property and take a good look at roofs, chimneys, windows, walls, foundations, gutters and decks.

Roof:

Do you see any cracked or missing shingles? Nail pops?  (where nails push the tabs of the shingles up allowing water to get in where the nails are coming through)

Guttering:

Check for loose or leaky gutter. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris.

Chimneys: (Masonry)

Check joints between bricks and stones. Look for white calcium-like deposits that indicate your masonry joints are no longer repelling water.  Masonry can be re-sealed with a water-resistant barrier. Have the flu cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep.

Exterior walls:

Look for trouble spots especially under eaves and near gutter downspouts.  Look for openings in wood siding.

Foundations:

Look for masonry cracks – these can be filled by a foundation specialist. Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil.

Windows:

Check that caulking and weather stripping is intact.  If you experienced condensation inside glass on double windows the weather seal has been compromised and the window or glass will need to be replaced. Spring clean your windows inside and out (a great homemade window cleaner can be made with one cup rubbing alcohol, one cup water, and a tablespoon of white vinegar)

Air Conditioning:

Change filters and have your unit cleaned and serviced  by a licensed HVAC professional.

Attics:

Check for signs of insects or rodents that may have come in during the winter

Leaks:

Check for leaky faucets, clogged drains, and sweaty pipes. Check hot water heaters for signs of corrosion and leaks

Decks and Patios:

Remove any leaves and debris that may have accumulated between boards. Clean, stain and reseal your wood decking if is faded or worn

Grills:

If you have not used your outdoor grill over the winter months, check the burner jets for clogs and obstructions.  Make sure gas hoses and connections are tight.
